THE PAIN OF SINGLE MOTHERHOOD; The tears of Janice

Janice looked out through the window to see how flooded everywhere was due to the heavy rains. She looked beside her and there laid a child whose health had deteriorated in less than an hour. All the phones were down and she didn't have anyone else to call. She is a single mother and she had been both a mum and a dad to her little one. She had taken up two jobs just to be able to cope with the high demands of motherhood...

She had just spoken with her boss to give her an IOU just for her to be able to take her child to see a pediatrician but No, her boss won't bug. She looked through her window once again but this time with tears in her eyes as she recalled the events that surrounded the birth of Jennifer, her child. Jennifer came as a result of a fling with Daniel who simply didn't want any child.Janice swore never to abort her child and was determined to raise the child alone with or without any help from anyone.
Jennifer was born with a rare bone marrow disease and doctors had to battle to keep her alive till this day. Janice has spent all her life's savings trying to be a mum to Jennifer but now she is beginning to wonder why she kept her in the first place.

Single motherhood can be very traumatic if it wasn't prepared for, but at the same time, when the decision to care for a child alone is made, then irrespective of what comes our way, the child still has a right to life, and a good one at that. Some women opt for single motherhood because they can't handle the stress of submitting to the authority of any man while some lost their husbands or boyfriends or spouses in different unavoidable circumstances. Some, however, had their pregnancies denied after conception. whichever way we see it, should we continue to stigmatize single mothers? Should the structure of every country not accommodate the everyday needs of a single mother? Should those who are genuinely stricken by this dilemma be left to carry these burdens alone?

Janice took a third look at Jennifer and realised how much she meant to her and how wonderful a companion she had been over the years despite her frailty. She gently lifted her and picked an umbrella for the rain. She struggled through the flood to get Jennifer to a nearby Children's Clinic. Tears kept rolling down her eyes as her daughter's eyes met hers, and amidst the tears, she said "Jenny, I won't let anything happen to you"...Her love for her sick child was just so strong... The undying love of a single mother for her child.

God bless Single Mothers!
